What happened in the Movie "signs"?

I don't understand the movie. How did the little boy know so much about the aliens? Towards the end, what did the alien spray into the child's face? This movie was so confusing. Why did mel Gibson become a preacher again? What? Was he proud the aliens attacked? (sarcasm)
